Licorice ( Glycyrrhiza glabra) extract is produced from the root of the plant. The principal constituent of liquorice to which it owes its characteristic sweet taste is glycyrrhizin, which is present in different varieties in a concentration of 2-14%. This principle is not found in the aerial parts of the plant. It is one of nature’s most subtle and yet effective skin lightening agents. It is also a depigmenting agent and inhibits the production of melanin. Hyperpigmentation and scarring are often a consequence of impure skin. Plants are also a source of actives that may help in reducing these effects which are particularly pronounced in the Asian population. Extracts from licorice root have beneficial effects and can be used to reduce hyperpigmentation. Licorice root extracts contain substances such as glabrene and isoliquiritigenin which can inhibit both mono- and diphenolase tyrosinase activities, both enzymes involved in melanin biosynthesis.Licorice is also used in some herbal creams as a mild anti-inflammatory for arthritis and rheumatism.
